Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper Series Review: Wild comedy for adults

The age old saying suggests, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. In Tribhuvan Mishra's (Manav Kaul) life, he's given the ability to be a pleasure machine in bed with the ladies. Juicing his sweet-sour skills Tribhuvan turns into a 'purush vaishya' (male escort) and decides to solve his financial crisis in a quickie. But all's not well, because things don't exactly turn out to be a bed of roses for Tribhuvan, a former CA Topper and a government officer, who is honest to a fault. It's the honesty that breaks his back and forces him into the salacious world of 'sex service' for the ladies. CA Topper is a wild and rather unabashed show about living with the consequences of your choices. Good guys finish last, bad boys are attractive and women's desires are meant to be locked up in a bedroom if not the closet in the corner, are some of the broader themes of the show. Is this worth watching? Absolutely! Just don't watch it with your family, because things get steamy a little too often.

At the heart of this show is an ensemble cast that deserves a standing ovation. The performances by Manav Kaul, Tillotama Shome, Naina Sareen, Shweta Basu Prasad, Shubhrajyoti Barat, Yamini Das, Ashok Pathak, Sumit Gulati and Shrikant Verma are absolutely brilliant. Seldom do we get such a big cast that performs so well all round. It is these multiple performances that end up overshadowing the series' shortcomings and making CA Topper a compelling watch.

On the subject of shortcomings, one must admit that not all is well in creator Puneet Krishna's sex-charged and action-packed comedy series. While the writing is top-notch, it's the treatment by directors Amrit Raj Gupta and Puneet that isn't always on the spot. At times, the production design, editing, and art design feel a bit inconsistent. But in all honesty, these are a minor grouse from a show that's high on creativity and unfiltered in its dialogue and plots.

The series has 9 episodes that serve up dollops of expletives, sex-driven scenes and loads of action. You can't watch this in the company of younger family members or even family elders. Unless you hail from a super-progressive family that doesn't consider sex a taboo. In either situation, CA Topper on Netflix warrants a must-watch if you like over-the-top comedy and surreal humour. The icing on the proverbial cake is, the writing is mature enough to employ cause-and-effect. Every character's actions have actual, logical repercussions and that's something Manav Kaul's Tribhuvan finds out the hard way.

Special mention to Kaul and Shome's performances which lead the ensemble pack. Also commendable are the dialogue and the narrative's ability to take up subjects like homosexuality and female pleasure without making them seem overly dramatic or in-your-face cringey. Puneet Krishna (who has also contributed greatly to the series Mirzapur) and his team have created a wild, risque and garrulous show.
