In an exclusive interview with Filmfare, Vijay Deverakonda opened up about the much-discussed failure of his 2022 pan-India film, Liger. The sports action drama, directed by Puri Jagannadh and co-starring Ananya Panday, was highly anticipated but ultimately did not resonate with audiences. Despite the setback, Vijay remains introspective and optimistic about the experience.
“No, I was obsessed with my character, learning martial arts, building my physique to look like a fighter, figuring out the stammer,” he shared. “Everything about the role was so challenging that I completely enjoyed the process of making it.”

A long-time admirer of director Puri Jagannadh, Vijay had high hopes for their collaboration. “Growing up, I was a huge fan and admirer of director Puri Jagannadh; his film Pokiri with Mahesh Babu sir is one of my favourites, and it was a dream of mine to make a film with him,” he expressed. “I was extremely sad that we didn’t make a better film; it was a great idea on paper that we fudged…but I have zero regret about the film.”
Vijay views the experience as a significant learning opportunity. “It taught me so much and changed me so much,” he noted. “And a lot of what I do now and in the future has some learnings from the experience of making Liger and the aftermath of its release. I consider it a net win in life.”

Looking ahead, Vijay is set to star in Kingdom, a spy action thriller directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The film, initially slated for a May 30, 2025 release, has been postponed to July 4, 2025, due to unforeseen national events impacting promotional activities.
Additionally, Vijay is working on VD14, directed by Rahul Sankrityan, with reports suggesting a reunion with actress Rashmika Mandanna. He is also involved in SVC59, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola, and JGM - Jana Gana Mana, another collaboration with Puri Jagannadh.
With these upcoming projects, Vijay Deverakonda is poised to make a strong comeback, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to his craft.
