Director SS Rajamouli praises Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli

On Sunday night, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer powered his team into the final of the IPL 2025. His heroic knock of 87 (41) against Mumbai Indians (MI) was the mainstay of the innings. Shreyas’ magnificent knock has not only been the talk of among the cricketing circuit and fans but also among the film fraternity. Director SS Rajamouli heaped praises on Shreyas’ batting performance and hailed him.

Rajamouli takes a dig at selectors?

Rajamouli stated that Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s Yorkers weren’t invincible. And that’s because Iyer beautifully guided those deliveries to the third man boundary. “Iyer guiding Bumrah’s and Boult’s yorkers to the third man boundary… Exquisite…,” wrote Rajamouli.

While appreciating Shreyas’ knock, the maverick director almost took a subtle dig at the Team India selectors. While highlighting the batsman’s achievements, the director also pointed out how unfortunate he was.  Rajamouli recalled that the batter had earlier taken Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 but was ‘dropped’ from Team India. Shreyas won the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, but couldn’t be picked for the national side. Recently, chief selector Ajith Agarkar pointed out that Shreyas had a good one-day series, played well in the domestic season as well but right now there's no room in Test cricket.  Shreyas was left out of India's 18-member Test squad for the tour of England.

“This man leads Delhi to a final… and is dropped…Leads Kolkata to a trophy… dropped…Leads a young Punjab to the finals after 11 years. He deserves this year’s trophy too,” posted the director justifying why Shreyas and his team deserves to win the 2025 IPL trophy.

‘Final Frontier’ for Virat Kohil

A cricket buff, Rajamouli couldn’t contain his excitement. He stated that Virat Kohli’s year-on-year performance for the team has been brilliant. With Kohli retiring from Test cricket and T-20, the director says that IPL 2025 is like the batsman’s ‘Final Frontier,’ and that he too deserves the trophy. “On the other hand, it is Kohli… who is performing year on year… compiling thousands of runs. The final frontier for him… He deserves it too.” On a concluding note, Rajamouli wrote that the result of the final is going to be a heartbreak. “Whatever the result… it’s going to be a heartbreak…”
